Cook over medium heat , stirring frequently, until butter is absorbed and apples are softened. This did NOT happen for me--I used a non-stick pan, I don't believe my mother ever did and it must have taken her longer and I guess she used more butter and sprinkled the apples with brown sugar & cinnamon after they were cooked. They were coated with a sweet buttery sauce but still crunchy! So i put them in the microwave for about 4 minutes in a glass dish with a vented lid--and that did it, they were softened.
