Spice with pepper, salt and garlic. Cook until onions turn clear. Remove that mixture. Add other 1/2 of the oil and butter with the squash. Cover and steam about 2 minutes. Remove lid and saute until slightly soft all the way through. Combine first mixture with squash. Toss and heat through.
