2 chicken breasts, skin on and bone-in
water to cover breasts
1 large onion, chopped
28 oz tin canned diced tomatoes, no-salt-added
small head of cabbage, chopped
1 pkg dill weed (comes in a plastic container at store)
salt and pepper to taste
heavy cream


How Do I Make Grandma's Komst Borscht?

Here is how you make Grandma's Komst Borscht:

Clean the chicken breasts* in running water and put them in a big Dutch oven. Put water to cover the breasts. Add about 1 Tbsp salt. Bring to a boil, and skim off the foam that rises. Lower heat to simmer for 2-3 hours. Drain the broth into a large bowl. Put the meat aside and add the broth back to the pot. Bring back to a boil and add the onion, tomatoes, cabbage, salt and pepper to taste, and dill. When it is cool enough to touch, remove the meat from one chicken breast and add it to the pot as well. (Save the other breast for chicken salad tomorrow). Lower heat to about med-low heat and simmer for at least an hour. You can simmer longer to get maximum flavour.Serve with the cream for each to add their own amount to their liking.Serving Size: Makes approximately 12 - 1 cup servings.Number of Servings: 12Recipe submitted by SparkPeople user GODSLAMB1ST.
