2 cups Garbanzo beans (canned) drained (about 1-1/2 14 oz. cans)
1/3 cup, Onions, raw, finely chopped
2 clove Garlic, minced
2 tbsp fresh Parsley, minced
1 tbsp fresh Cilantro, minced (optional)
1 tsp Coriander, ground
1 tsp Cumin , ground
1/4 tsp Turmeric, ground (optional)
1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1 cup Bread crumbs, dry,
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Lemon Pepper
(some freshly ground Pepper, optional)
Water if needed
Flour for rolling the Falafel in
Oil for frying (at least 1 cup)


How Do I Make Falafel?

Here is how you make Falafel:

Mash the garbanzo beans with a fork on a plate, then put in a large bowl. Stir in the chopped onion, minced garlic, parsley, (and optional cilantro), coriander, cumin (optional turmeric), baking powder, bread crumbs, salt, lemon pepper, (and optional extra pepper). Don't be afraid to use your hands. Shape the mixture into 1-1/2 inch balls. If the mixture does not hold together, add a little water. Roll the balls in flour.Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 325 F - or use a deep heavy skillet over medium-high heat. ( I used an electric fry pan.) Add a few balls of Falafel at a time. You may need to adjust the heat slightly after the first couple of falafels, and be sure to turn frequently so they brown evenly.Serving Size: 1/6 recipe - about 6 ballsNumber of Servings: 6Recipe submitted by SparkPeople user ANTIOCHIA.
