1 1/2 T. paprika
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
vegetable oil
6 C. beef stock or broth
2 C. water
1-2 bay leaf
1 1/2 tsp. dried parsley
1/2 tsp. dried marjoram
2 sprigs chopped celery leaves
1/2 C. chopped onion
1 T. worcestershire sauce
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
1 C. red beans (previously soaked)
1 1/2 C. carrots, chopped or sliced
1 1/2 C. celery, chopped
1/2 C. raw barley

Here is how you make Beefy Bean and Barley Soup:

Combine flour, paprika, salt and pepper. Lightly coat beef pieces in flour mixture and brown in oil over medium heat. (You may need to add more flour to the mixture in order to cover all your meat. ) Remove meat pieces to soup pot.Add broth, water, herbs, worcest. sauce, tomatoes and beans to the meat in the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer for an 30 minutes.After 30 minutes, return to a boil; add barley, carrots and celery and simmer for an additional hour.
