Add garlic cloves and onion and cook until onions are caramelized, stirring often. Add steak and brown on each side. Reduce heat to medium high. Stir in celery, potatoes, and thyme, turning ingredients often to keep them from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Add tomato, turning it in well. Salt and pepper to taste. Add broth and increase heat to high. Add kale, carefully stirring it in. Bring to a boil for at least 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Cook until potatoes are soft.
