1 c. chopped onion

Here is how you make Smokey Split Pea Soup with ham:

Place ham bone and water in a 6 qt. stockpot. Cover and cook on low until ham easily removes from bone (about 1 hour). Remove ham from water, and set aside to cool. Add remaining ingredients to ham stock, and simmer, stirring often, until peas are tender, about 1 hour. Remove half of the soup, puree in a blender and return back to stock pot. If the soup is too thick, add a water to get the desired consistency.Remove ham from ham bone, and trim off fat. Chop into bite sized chunks and add to soup (after puree has been returned to pot.)
