Saute chopped ham and mushrooms until the mushrooms are soft. Remove from pot and drain excess liquid. Set aside.2) Add another tablespoon of butter to the pot. Saute the celery, carrots, and onions until they begin to soften. Add the split peas and add enough water to cover (approximately 6 cups). Add bay leaves and season with the salt and pepper to taste. Simmer uncovered until the peas soften and begin to fall apart, adding water as needed if it evaporates too quickly.3) Using a slotted spoon, move most of the peas and the vegetables to a blender or food processor. Add enough of the remaining liquid to make it easy to blend them. Blend until mostly smooth and then return to the pot. Stir in the ham and sauteed mushrooms and taste for spices. Add salt/pepper to taste.
