Melt butter in a large soup pot. When hot, add onions and "sweat" the onions over low heat with the lid on the pot. Do this until the onions are very mushy.Add the broth, lentils, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil then simmer until lentils are soft. Remove the bay leaf. Puree the soup with a hand blender or in a conventional blender.
