Here is how you make Barbara's Famous French Onion Soup:

Step 1:Peel the onions, cut off the root ends and discard. Thinly slice the onions. Melt the butter ina 4 quart saucepan. Add the onions and ground pepper to butter. Saute the onions, stirring frequently, until they are light golden brown. Sprinkle with the flour and stir until all traces of the flour disappear. Cook 1 minute longer, then remove from the heat.Step 2:Gradually add beef broth, stirring oinon mixture constantly. Str in water and bay Return to moderatley high heat and bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and cook onion soup, uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes. Discard Bay Leaf. Taste onion soup and add salt & pepper if desired.Step 3:Turn soup into a broiler proof soup tureen, casserole or individual onion soup bowls on a jelly-roll pan. Add croutons, just enough to cover the top, do not push them down under the soup. Generously prinkle the croutons with the two types of cheese. Place them in the oven at 425 degrees. Bake until the cheese melts and turns golden. Remove from oven and serve immediatley. Serves 6. The soup can be made ahead of time. After Step 2, refrigerate the soup.
