Here is how you make Mom's Split Pea Soup:

Mix all ingredients except the ham in a large pot, cover and cook slowly for one hour. Using a potato masher smash soup into a smooth blend. May take more than an hour because you want all the veggies to be soft. When soup is smooth and ham and cook about 5 minutes more. You can leave out the ham to make it vegetarian.
