Add 8-12 cups of water to the pot. Simmer for 1-2 hours, making sure the lentils and peas are cooked. (I have precooked the split peas covered in water in the microwave to quick start them, changing the water a couple of times and cooking on high for 3 minutes each time. Then with more fresh water I cook on 50% power for 10 minutes. The peas have now tripled or quadrupled in volume.)
