Here is how you make Beef and Barley Gruel:

Put beef, onions, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, and basil in a medium sauce pan. Season with salt and pepper. Add water until it is an inch above everything. Simmer on low heat for 2 hours.Add barley and return to a simmer. Add extra water if necessary. Simmer for 30-40 minutes. Remove the meat and shred with 2 forks. Return the meat to the sauce pan.Mix the soup base or boullion cube with 1 cup of water and heat (in the microwave). Add the warm broth to the saucepan. Add the carrots and peas.
