2 packages of cubed ham (or buy a ball of ham and cube only half)

How Do I Make Homemade Gumbo?

Here is how you make Homemade Gumbo:

This recipe makes roughly 15-20 1-cup servings.Begin by pouring tomato sauce and whole tomatoes into large pot. Using tomato sauce can, fill with water and pour into pot as well. Let this heat up on medium-low.While this is heating, slice sausage into 1/4 to 1/2 inch rounds. Then, proceed to slicing/dicing the mushrooms, onions, garlic, and peppers. Put veggies and sausage into a skillet, and cover until sausage is cooked thoroughly. Take this time to slice the okra into manageable pieces. Add okra immediately to the large pot.Once sausage and veggie combo is done, add them to the large pot that should be simmering by now. Then add the package of shrimp (make sure there are no tails left on them) and add the cubed ham and canned turkey breast.Add seasoning to taste (I usually only add something like a sodium free Tony Chachere's, or regional equivalent, since the tomato sauce and whole tomatoes have plenty of salt already, including the salt found in the meats.), and stir occasionally for the next 1 - 2 hours, or until okra is done.Goes well with white or brown rice and crackers.Number of Servings: 20Recipe submitted by SparkPeople user SIMPLY_MYSELF.
