1/2 c water
1 c all-purpose flour
1/2 c whole-wheat flour
2 Tbs chopped walnuts
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 c firmly packed dark brown sugar
1/2 c 1% milk
1/4 c canola oil
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp granulated sugar (for topping)

Here is how you make Wholesome Date Nut Bread:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9x5 inch loaf pan w/nonstick spray. Place the dried dates and water in a small saucepan, heat over medium heat until the water simmers, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2 minutes, remove from heat and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, walnuts, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Make a well in the center. In another medium bowl, stir together the brown sugar, milk, oil, egg, and vanilla until well blended. Pour into the well in the flour mixture, stir until just combined (do not over mix), about 1 minute. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake 35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in pan, on rack, 5-10 min, remove from pan onto rack to finish cooling.
