I'm still working on this recipe. I intended to replace half the fat with applesauce but I didn't have any on hand when the craving hit. I may try it with just egg whites at some point, and I may try replacing some of the sugar with honey. My goal isn't necessarily a low-calorie brownie...it's a brownie that has some nutritional value not just empty calories. Add sugar and apriva/splenda and canola oil. Add vanilla and eggs and mix well. Add cocoa (I actually used 2 tbsps of Hershey's special dark cocoa and 4 tbsps of the regular) and mix well. In another bowl, mix both flours, salt and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to wet. Stir with spatula until just moistened. Grind flax seed in blender and chop almonds and add to mixture, again stirring until just incorporated. Bake in greased 8- inch square pan at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Rotate pan halfway through baking time for even baking. Brownies are done when the top has lost its glossy look and springs back slightly.
