Here is how you make Apple Layer Cake:

Cream 2 c. sugar and shortening in bowl. Beat in eggs. Sift flour, baking soda, salt, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon together. Add to creamed mixture, beating until smooth. Blend in vanilla. Combine apples with water, fold into batter, mixing well. Pour into 3 wax paper lined cake panes. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Combine milk, 1 c. sugar, egg yolks and 3 T. flour in saucepan.
