2 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour
4 eggs (slightly beaten)
1 (1 lb.) box of raisins
1 lb. walnuts pieces
2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 Tbsp. vanilla


How Do I Make Grandma Mary's Applesauce Cake?

Here is how you make Grandma Mary's Applesauce Cake:

Heat applesauce in pan on the stove until warm and just starting to bubble. Put the warm applesauce into a large mixing bowl. Add baking soda and stir (mixture will bubble up-this is normal). Add butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla to bowl and stir until mixed. Sift spices and flour into another bowl. Add nuts and raisins to flour mixture and stir (this will keep them from going to the bottom of pan). Add flour mixture to applesauce and mix well. Place in a well greased and floured angel food cake pan (with a layer of greased waxed paper in bottom of pan to aid in removal). Bake at 350 degrees for 2 hours (or until toothpick inserted comes out clean). This will make 32 large slices (double if slices are then cut in half). Keep cake in a covered container to keep it moist. This cake will freeze well. My mom used to make hers at Thanksgiving and freeze it until Christmas.
