In a medium sauce pan, mix sugar, tapioca, milk and egg; let stand 5 minutes.Meanwhile, put rice and 1/2 cup milk in a blender or food processor, pulse 3-4 times. Add to sauce pan and stir in cardamom.Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a full boil. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Cool for 20 minutes and stir.
