Combine 1/2 cup sugar, flour and salt in heavy saucepan or double boiler. Mix in 1 whole egg and 3 egg yolks. Stir in milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat, add vanilla.

Spread small amount of pudding onto bottom of 1 1/2 quart casserole, cover with layer of wafers. Top with layer of bananas. Pour about 1/3 of pudding over bananas. Continue to layer wafers, bananas and pudding to make 3 layers, each ending with pudding.

Beat 3 egg whites with remaining sugar until stiff peaks are formed. Put over pudding, making sure to go all the way to the edge. Put under broiler until light brown.
