1 bay leaf
2 C 1% milk
3 T plain flour

cook onion in olive oil until opaque. Reduce heat. Add dry spices and flour. Cook until flour is absorbed. Add milk and whisk until smooth. Add bay leaf and simmer 10 minutes. Beat egg and add 1 T of warm milk to temper before adding egg to pot. Add 1 1/2 C cheddar cheese to mixture and whisk until smooth. Add cooked macaroni and combine. Put mixture into casserole dish. In a small bowl combine dry bread crumbs with remaining cheese. Spread on top of macaroni mixture. Dice margarine and scatter on top of dish.
