1 to 1 1/2 sticks of Margarine

Here is how you make Home made Chicken and Dumplings:

Boil Chicken until meat falls off the bone or tender.Render out the fat, skin and bones, saving the broth to boil the dumplings in, strain to make sure all bones and excess skin is removed.Set a side the Chicken (can be cut into bite size pieces if desired).Put broth from chicken in a large pot and add the bullion, chicken broth, ( I also add the 1/2 stick butter to make broth richer, but you can leave this out).Bring to a boil.While broth is coming to a boil, mix in a mixing bowl the 1 1/ 2 Cups flour, egg, 1 Stick margarine, and milk. Using a kneading paddle on mixer mix until well incorporated and dough forms a ball.Place on a well floured board and roll out to a thin layer. (about 1/2 cup of flour used to roll out the dumplings.Cut into strips about 1/2" thick and 1 inch in length.Cover well with flour, this helps in keeping them from sticking together in the pot while cooking and also adds in thickening the broth.When the broth in the pot comes to a boil add the dumplings one at a time into the pot only stirring to get the dumplings all in to the broth.Once all the dumplings are in the pot season with salt and pepper. Cover and reduce the temperature to Simmer. Keep the pot covered and only stir once in a while or you will stir the dumpling apart.Make sure when stirring the dumplings you get to the bottom of the pot so none stick to the bottom and he temperature is low to prevent them from burning to the bottom.When the dumpling are tender and cut easily with a fork they are done and the chicken can then go into the pot to warm.After about 5 minutes they are ready to eat and enjoy.
