6 medium to large onions
1 large (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
1 large (28 oz) can diced tomatoes
1 small (15 oz) can light red kidney beans
1 small (15 oz) can dark red kidney beans
1 small (15 oz) can white kidney beans (cannelini)
1 small (15 oz) can black beans (optional)
1 small (15 oz) can tomato sauce
2 lbs ground turkey (with 3 it will be much meatier, but I try to keep the fat down)
1 Tbsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp cinnamon
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 clove garlic- crushed
1 tsp chili powder
1 sprinkle cayenne pepper

Extra broth or tomato juice as desired.


How Do I Make Grampa's Chili?

Here is how you make Grampa's Chili:

Makes 12 one-cup servings. Dice onions and brown 4 of them (the remaining two will be added at the end) in oil of your choice. Brown meat. In large dutch oven, pot, or slow-cooker, mix onions and meat. Add canned ingredients. Add spices. Let cook on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for at least 1 hour. Longer will allow the tomatoes to break down more and form a soupier, more uniform consistency. When almost ready to serve, stir in remaining two diced onions and spice to your taste. I add brown sugar to reduce acidity and chili powder to make it spicy. Tomato juice or broth may be added to attain desired consistency. Serve warm. This recipe makes A LOT of chili and I usually will make half and freeze the remaining canned ingredients, or just freeze half of the chili to have on hand.
