Heat oven to 350. Spray 2 qt casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray. Begin layering with a thin layer of sliced potatoes. Top with 2 slices of cheese (8 pieces), 6 t sized pats of margarine, 2 T diced onion, and 2 T of instant potatoes. Continue layering 2 more times. Add one more layer of just potatoes and pats of margarine. Pour milk in almost to the top of the potatoes. Sprinkle top with rice krispies. Bake for 1 1/2 hours uncovered.
