1 1/2 T ground cumin
6 cups low sodium chicken broth
2 T cornstarch
2 T water
2 T lime juice

Beans: put all ingredients (except salt) together in a pot with a tight-fitting lid. Bring to a boil, skim scum if there is any. Add salt, reduce to low, cover and simmer until tender 1-1 1/2 hrs. Add water if it gets too low. Discard bay leaves.Soup: Heat oil in a Dutch oven, add next 3 veggies and salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly browned, 12 to 15 minutes. Reduce to medium low and add garlic, pepper flakes, and cumin. Cook, stirring for 3 minutes. Stir in beans with cooking liquid and broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer about 30 minutes.
