Here is how you make Simple Steamed Clams:

Wash clams under cold water to get sand, grit off the shells. Heat oil in large saucepan, saute onions, celery, carrots until soft and starting to shivel, maybe 10 minutes. Add wine and pepper. Add clams, cover, bring to boil. Boil about 3 minutes. As soon as clams open, remove from pot with slotted spoon. (Put them in soup sized bowls) Bring the liquid back to boil, let reduce to about half, and spoon over the clams. Don't pour, because the bottom might be sandy.
