This chili has an unexpected hint of sweetness from the Trader Joe's salsa. If you can't get Trader Joe's but want the same effect, substitutions are suggested in the recipe (I've made it both ways when I was out of the salsa.) This chili is great served immediately but leftovers are even better on Day 2 after the flavors have combined. What Course Is Spicy Sweet Turkey Chili?Spicy Sweet Turkey Chili is for Dinner. Add onion, red and green bell pepper. Stir occasionally for 3-5 minutes until vegetables softened. Do not brown. Add chopped garlic. Stir another 1 minute. Add 2 pounds of ground turkey and increase heat to medium high. Stir to mix in vegetables and allow turkey to cook. Continue stirring occasionally to break up turkey and cook for 15-20 minutes or until pink has disappeared. Do not brown turkey.Add tomato paste. Stir to mix. Add 15 oz can of diced tomatoes, 16 oz jar of Trader Joe's Tomato Salsa, 1 can of chick peas (drained), frozen sweet corn, ketchup and cayenne pepper. Add salt if desired. Stir and allow to simmer covered for 30 minutes (stirring occasionally). Chili will be thick & hearty. NOTE: I purchase all products with "no salt added" to lower sodium intake, but salt can be added to suit your taste. SUBSITUTION: If you are not near a Trader Joe's, you can get the same sweet/spicy flavor by substituting the salsa with another can of diced tomatoes (2 cans total in the recipe), adding 2 tablespoons of sugar or Splenda, and increasing ketchup from 2 TBSP to 1/2 cup and cayenne pepper from 2 to 3 teaspoons. OPTIONAL GARNISH: Top with grated cheese, chopped green onion or a dollop of sour cream. SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve with a side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal. It is also yummy served over pasta. I use either whole wheat or Trader Joe's whole grain pasta.
