Add onion, pepper, and pinch of salt and sweat for 5 minutes. Add garlic and mushrooms and sweat for 4 more minutes. Add split peas, rice, spices, and broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer and cook for 1 hour. Pulse in food processor 4-5 times (do not puree). Add 3/4 c bread crumbs and mix in. Refrigerate for 20-30 minutes. Scoop out and form into balls, then flatten into patties.
