1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste - can omit)
1/2 teaspoon garam masala

Wash lentils and drain well.Heat oil, fry onion, ginger and garlic, until onion is golden brown.Add turmeric, stir well.Mix in drained lentils, fry for 2 minutes.Add hot water, bring to the boil then reduce to simmer.Cover and cook 20 minutes, until lentils are half cooked.Add salt and garam masala, stir well and continue cooking until lentils are soft, and the dal is porridge consistency.
