1 Tbsp canola oil

1 Tbsp Italian herbs (or combination of oregano, basil and marjoram to equal 1 Tbsp.)
1 cup hot water
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Here is how you make Herbed Whole Wheat French Bread:

Combine yeast, 1/4 cup warm water and 1/4 tsp. sugar. Set aside until frothy. Combine 1 Tbsp. sugar, oil, salt, herbs, and hot water. Cool mixture until lukewarm and add to yeast mixture. Stir in flours and knead about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, turning once. Cover with lightly damp towel and let rise until doubled. Punch down and let rest 15 minutes. Shape into 12" x 15" rectangle. Roll up, starting at 15" edge. Place loaf on greased cookie sheet and make 4-5 slashes diagonally across top. Let rise until double.Preheat oven to 400 degrees. If desired, mix together 1 egg, beaten and 2 Tbsp. milk and brush on top of loaf, sprinkling with poppy or sesame seeds.Bake at 400 for 20 minutes until nicely browned and hollow-sounding when tapped on the top.
