Set aside.Heat oil in a large pot, then add onion and garlic and cook over medium heat until onion is soft, about 3 minutes. Add curry powder, ginger, cinnamon, coriander and salt. Cook over medium heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in syrup or other sweetener, water or stock, and yams.
