1 cup chopped red onion
1 TBSP minced garlic
2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp mustard powder
2 cups chicken broth
3/4 cup tomato sauce
3 TBSP balsamic vinegar
1 TBSP dijon mustard
2 TBSP agave nectar or honey
1 1/2 cups dry (uncooked) brown lentils, rinsed

Here is how you make Barbecued Lentils:

Heat olive oil in a 2 qt saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and saute until softened and translucent, about 3 min. Add garlic and spices and sautee until fragrant, about 1 min. do not brown garlic.Add broth, tomato sauce, vinegar, mustard, agave or honey, and lentils, stir well, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until lentils are tender, but intact, about 30 min. Lentil cooking times vary. If necessary, add an additional 1/2 cup water and cook additional 5 minutes if lentils are not tender. Season with salt and pepper.
