Melt butter in a large heavy skillet over medium heat. Add onion, and cook, stirring until softened. Turn the heat up to medium-high, and add sliced mushrooms. Cook until the mushrooms are limp and browned. Add flour to skillet, cook one minute to get the 'raw' flavor out of the flour. Whisk in broth and sherry. Allow to thicken 5 minutes (may need to turn heat down to avoid over-thickening).
