Here is how you make Lentils and Rice with Beef-less Ground Beef:

Heat water and sugar in a large saucepan over medium heat, until the sugar is dissolved. Raise the heat to high and add the onions. Cover and cook, stirring frequently, until almost all the water is boiled out. Add garlic, cumin, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and pepper. Cover again until all the liquid has boiled out and the mixture starts to stick and brown, stirring frequently. When the mixture has browned quite well (take care not to let it burn, which happens quickly and easily) add the lentils and 4 cups of the water. Turn the heat to medium and cook uncovered until the lentils begin to soften, about 20 minutes. Add enough of the remaining cups of water to cover the lentils by 1 inch. Stir in the rice and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cover again and turn the heat to low.While the lentils and rice are cooking, heat the oil in a frying pan and add the ground "beef." Cook for about 5-7 minutes.Check the rice and lentils after 20 minutes. If they are both tender, they are done. If not tender, add more liquid and cover and cook until done.
