Add onions and garlic and heat until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add broccoli stalks, sweet potato and turnip, along with half of the vegetable broth and the bay leaves. Turn heat to medium-high. Simmer about 5 minutes, then add lentils. Simmer until vegetables and lentils are tender, about 15 minutes. Remove bay leaves, then add milk and puree using a stick blender. (If you don't have a stick blender, transfer batches to a blender to puree.) Add remaining broth, artichokes and broccoli and simmer until broccoli is tender. Add grated cheese to bowls just before serving. Makes about six hearty 1 1/2 servings.
