How Do I Make Vegetable Soup Puree a la Francaise?

Here is how you make Vegetable Soup Puree a la Francaise:

Boil the peeled, cut up potatoes with the quartered onion, garlic, salt and pepper for about 10 minutes in a medium saucepan. Drain these vegetables and set the potato/onions aside in the strainer. Chop all the other vegetables while the potatoes are boiling. Melt the butter in the saucepan and put in the other chopped vegetables (except the tomatoes). Sweat the vegetables for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. (Don't fry them.). Put the potatoes/onions back into the pot, along with the chopped tomatoes. Cover with water. Cook for about 20 minutes until the vegetables are all softened. Drain most of the liquid (reserve it to put back in if needed). Then when done cooking puree the vegetables with a hand-held blender.
