Here is how you make Old Fashioned Cabbage Soup:

Cook chicken until done; remove skin and bones. Pull chicken into small chunks/shreds. Set aside.Meanwhile, chop cabbage and cook in a large kettle of water until tender. In saucepan, saute onion and mushrooms in butter until tender. Stir in flour until smooth and well-blended. Add chicken broth and can of evaporated milk, stirring constantly over medium heat until smooth. Drain water from cabbage and reserve if needed to thin the soup. Add the onions/mushrooms/soup base to the cabbage in the kettle. Add salt and pepper to taste. If too thick, add the reserved cabbage water until it is of the right consistency.
