1 cup yellow split peas
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch slices
7 green cardamom pods
2 cups vegetable broth
2 cups water
1 medium onion, chopped
1 tsp garam marsala
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp butter
pinch of cayene pepper
lemon juice
salt & pepper to taste


How Do I Make Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup?

Here is how you make Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup:

Add broth, cardamom and peas to a stock pot and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook for 15 minutes. Add sweet potato and cook until tender. In a saute pan melt butter and cook onions until tender and translucent. Add cumin and garam marsala and cook until onion starts to carmelize. Set aside. Remove cardamom pods and puree 1/2 of pea mixture until smooth, adding small amounts of water if needed. Return to pot and add spiced onion mixture. Add cayene pepper, salt and lemon juice to taste.
