Put the sugar into warm water. Stir and sprinkle in the yeast.2. While it's proofing, add the dry ingredients together and mix.3. Pour yeast and water into mixer and turn on. Add water in 1/4C, then 1/8C increments until you've got a stiff dough. Knead for 3-5 minutes with the mixer. Dough should be barely tacky.4. Turn dough into warm, oiled (with the canola oil) bowl. 5. Cover and let rise 45-60 minutes.6. Divide into 5 equal balls. Knead, then, rolling the dough between your parallel hands perpendicular to the table, make fat snakes out of them (12"-18"). Place on greased cookie sheet (spray oil). Cover and let rise another 45 minutes.7. Place in oven pre-heated to 350 for 45-50 minutes.These rolls will be VERY hard -- which is why they're great for dipping into a bowl of soup or stew. They'll hang tough.
