Cut shortening into flour. Melt butter in a small bowl. Add buttermilk to flour a little at a time, folding it in gently with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon. Do NOT force/mash milk into flour! Add a little more at the edges of the bowl if needed. Flour a surface lightly and dump out contents of bowl. Gently knead together with floured hands and form a rectangle about 1" to 1 1/2" thick. Take a sharp knife or pizza cutter and cut into 8 squares. In a medium cast-iron skillet, place the biscuits so there's a little space in between. Pour the melted butter over the tops and use your fingers to spread it over tops. Bake for 12-15 minutes depending on how fast your oven is. Gently release biscuits from pan by lifting from the bottom with a fork.
