This is an old recipe I have updated to now. The original called for lard and later shortening. I changed to smart balance to improve the fats. Add egg yolks. Put cocoa into heat-proof measuring cup, add boiling water to make 1 cup total with cocoa stirred in (you will not need 1 cup of water). Add baking soda to buttermilk (or 1 cup milk with 1 T vinegar added to sour). Add flour (start with 2C flour), baking powder and cocoa mixture to sugar mixture, combine lightly and slowly add buttermilk. Add extra flour in 1T increments to reach desired consistency - thick, yet pourable.
