Water, tap, 6 cups boiling
Onions, raw, 1 large
Brown Sugar, .5 cup, packed
Baking Soda, 1 tsp
ground mustard, 1.5 tsp

Here is how you make Abigail Adams Baked Beans:

soak beans overnight. Drain and cook in crock pot on high for 1.5 hours with 1 tsp baking soda. Drain. simmer salt pork (if you use bacon skip this part.) for 10 minutes. drain, rinse and pat dry. Then dice. Combine brown sugar, molasses, 1.5 tsp ground mustard and salt pork (bacon). Combine with beans. Peel onion, score an X into the top of the onion. Return beans and molasses mix to crockpot. Nestle onion in the middle and top with boiling water. Put on high until boiling and then lower heat and cook for 10-12 hours. Remove lid the last 30-60 minutes to thicken.
