500 grams Cubed Beef Stewing Steak
2 large Potatoes, cubed
2 large Carrots, 1/4" slices
1 large Parsnip, sliced
1 small Turnip (Swede in England)
1 large Onion, diced
2 med stalks Celery, sliced
2 Tbs Olive Oil
1 Cup Flour, seasoned w/ salt & pepper
2 tsp Garlic, minced
2 Beef Bouillon cubes
2 Pints Boiling water
1/4 Cup Heinz 57 Sauce, or other steak sauce
1/2 Tbs each of Basil, Thyme & Paprika (dried)
1/2 Cup Frozen Peas (optional)
salt and pepper to taste



How Do I Make Winter Root and Beef Stew?

Here is how you make Winter Root and Beef Stew:

Prepare all the vegetables in advance as indicated - cubed, diced, sliced - and set aside. Prepare the cubed beef by ensuring cubes are roughly the same size and excess fat has been removed. Place the seasoned flour in a plastic bag and toss the cubed beef in the flour to drench.Heat the olive oil in a large skillet and place the flour-drenched beef cubes in the hot oil, turning to brown evenly. Remove from the skillet to a stew pot. Toss the onion and celery in to the hot skillet (throw in a few Tablespoons of water to help soften the vegetables without burning). Soften for about 3-5 minutes and then add to the beef.Combine the 2 bouillon cubes with the boiling water, stirring to dissolve the bouillon completely. Then pour enough liquid into the pot to cover the beef. Turn on the heat and bring back to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer.Throw in the carrots and let simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Now add the other root vegetables and the spices, allow to simmer for another 30-40 minutes, stirring to keep from burning the bottom of the pot. Add the steak sauce and correct the spices as necessary.
