Rinse mung dal and let soak for 30 minutes. 2. Heat split peas with water and salt until boiling. Reduce heat, cover and let simmer 15 - 20 minutes, until tender and thickened. Add more water, if necessary, to prevent drying out. Add the ginger, jalapeno, tomatoes and tumeric. Cover and let cook until done. 3. Heat oil in small pan. Add red chile and then the cumin seeds. Then the garlic and asetofoetida. Pour into the dal.
