4 - 5 cups water ( can substitute chicken broth but you will need to readjust caloric value)
3 cloves of garlic ( you can add more if you life)
1/2 cup of chopped onions
1 tbsp of olive oil
salt and pepper to taste


How Do I Make Smashed Split Peas?

Here is how you make Smashed Split Peas:

First you clean you peas in water and saok for about 1 hour. ( the longer you soak the less cooking time.)To begin cooking-Fill a sauce pan with your liquid and salt the water. Put your peas in and cook on medium the goal is to maintain a medium simmer . Keep an eye on the peas stirring occassionally. As the liquid starts to boil off slowly smash the peas while stirring - you will need to increase your stirring during this time. ( If you need a little more liquid you can add it at this time.) This process should take about 35 to 40 mintues depending on how soft you want the peas. Once you have a nice consistency take peas off burner.In a separate skillet add your onions and garlic and a tsp of olive oil - cook until translucent. The finer the onion is cut the better. Once you are done remove from heat and add the remaining olive oil. Add this mixture to your peas mixing throughly - salt and pepper to taste.
