Here is how you make Mom's Swiss Steak w/ Mashed Potatoes:

Brown beef steaks in deep skillet. When browned fill skillet with water, and let simmer for two hours. During this time, I cube and boil the potatoes. I mash them with a tiny amount of milk, margarine and salt and pepper. I like them to have lots of texture.I also slice the mushrooms and add them in when there is only 1/2 hour left to go. After the mushrooms are tender, I wisk the flour in with some warm water in a seperate bowl. This will help to make a gravy without lump and without butter. Add this mixture into the pan and stir.
