In a non-stick dutch oven or very large frying pan, fry the steak until brown on all sides (it shouldn't be cooked all the way through). Remove from pan, reserve liquid.Return liquid to pan, add onions and gently simmer for 5-10 minutes, depending on how soft you like your onions. Add mushrooms and stir-fry on medium heat until all liquid has evaporated and onions are soft.Return beef to pan, and add remaining ingredients. Bring to a slight boil, then turn heat to just above simmer.
