Add chopped onins, celery and carrots and saute about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook another one minute. Add the beans (either the cooked dry beans or canned beans, rinsed and drained). Add the broth, salt, thyme, sage and water. Cover and simmer about 20 minutes. Add the diced tomatoes and simmer another 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
