This is a recipe adapted from my grandma and uses half and half as the "heavy cream" and lightens it even more by diluting it with fat free milk. The pinch of cornstarch thickens it up so it is that creamy "chowda" consistency.

How Do I Make New England Clam Chowda'?

Here is how you make New England Clam Chowda':

In a large soup pot cut bacon slices into small pieces (or if your butcher sells them by the pound get those) and saute until it stars to stick to the pan. Add the diced potatoes and white wine to deglaze. Let that cook for about 10-15 minutes then add onions, celery, garlic and spices. Saute until the onions are translucent then add the clams with their juice into the pot. Simmer down until potatoes start to become tender (the smaller you dice the potatoes the faster this happens). Turn to low-medium and add the half and half and milk. Stir and add in the pinch of cornstarch. Let simmer on low for 10-15 minutes until it starts to thicken. Serve hot with a garnish of parsley (optional) and oyster crackers (optional). Serving Size: Makes 12 - 1.5 cup servingsNumber of Servings: 12Recipe submitted by SparkPeople user JPHILLIPS14.
