1 half-gallon (about 10 cups) homemade chicken broth
about a pound of chicken breasts, fat removed
about 10 cups of water
1 small onion
27 baby-cut carrots, sliced
about 2 stalks celery, sliced
1.3 pounds of brussels sprouts, cleaned and halved
uncooked wheat berries or other whole grain
1 lb whole wheat pasta
3 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 tablespoon summer savory
salt to taste

Here is how you make Maureen's Hearty Homemade Chicken Soup, Variation 1:

Sautee one chopped onion in olive oil. Add broth and water. Add garlic and wheat berries or other whole grain. Cook chicken in mix until done, then set aside chicken to let cool. Clean and chop vegetables. Simmer broth with wheat berries for about 45 minutes after chicken is done. Add vegetables, summer savory, and pasta then bring back to a continuous simmer. Simmer for 20 minutes. Shred cooked chicken. Turn off burner and add chicken. Let cool a few minutes and dig in!Makes about 12 servings. Make it and have it for days!
